Dear Jamie Rose,
I am so excited to buy my first sex toy, but I don’t know where to start. Do you have any tips or tricks for buying sex toys?
I am genuinely so excited for you! Sex toy shopping is so much fun but can be a nerve-wracking experience for some. There are tons of shops and so many toys and materials! Oh, where to begin!!
Well, here are some things you can consider when buying a sex toy:
- Where are you buying your toy? Know which sites or stores have sex toys. I personally believe in supporting local businesses and businesses that are ethical. I really love Spectrum Boutique, Unbound Babes, and Shopenby!
- Materials are important! Check what your sex toys are made of. Some toys are made of porous materials that could harbor bacteria and infection. This can be tricky because some toys say “silicone” but when you further look at the ingredients it might have things like synthetic latex rubber, polyvinyl chloride/ vinyl, jelly rubber, or sometimes a low grade silicone that can have chemical additives. You might want to start off with toys that are made from medical silicone, stainless steel, or for play with temperature, borosilicate glass.
- Rechargeable toys are so much easier – you don’t have to change the batteries!
- Are you going to be using this toy in the water? If so, make sure you check the description to see if the toy is waterproof.
I personally like to go in person to stores to be able to physically see different toys. I like to pick up toys and see if they call out to me but in the middle of a pandemic, that may not be possible. Another option is to follow social media influencers! Oftentimes they will highlight some of their favorite toys or have q&a sessions where you can ask them about good toys for a beginner.
But ultimately, there is no one who knows your body better than you do. You should explore your body to know what you might like best. And always remember, WASH YOUR SEX TOYS WHEN YOU GET THEM AND AFTER YOU USE THEM!!!
