The first full moon of 2021 lands in the fiery and fun sign of Leo on Thursday, January 28th. One of the things I love about the moon cycle is that it follows a natural rhythm, just like seasons come and go, each month brings a new and full moon. These events offer us a chance to slow down and do some reflection, which can be a great way to care for ourselves. After all, no one knows us better than ourselves!

Astrology can be a helpful tool for introspection and growth and the astrological sign a full moon lands in also provides information on what may be showing up in our lives around this time. Read on if you’re curious about what type of energy the first full moon of the year may bring and how to best prepare!

You Are Now Entering…Aquarius Season!

January started off in the grounded and practical earth sign of Capricorn, but on the 19th we entered Aquarius season. Aquarius is a forward-thinking air sign that loves freedom, new ideas, and creating community. The last few weeks of January may feel markedly different than the first few weeks of the year and you might sense that something new is on the horizon.

Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn, which is tied to work and responsibility. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, which represents sudden change and innovation. It makes sense that the 1st of the year is associated with getting organized, starting new routines, purchasing a planner – very Saturn oriented activities that set us up for success. The new moon we had on the 13th of January in Capricorn was an ideal time for setting goals and intentions and preparing for the new year, while the full moon illuminates and brings clarity to things we’ve been working on.

Leo is the Sign of Self…AKA It’s Time to Shine

Interestingly enough, Aquarius and Leo are opposite signs. While Aquarius is tied to community and the collective, Leo focuses on self-expression and being seen. Full moons shine a light on what’s working in our lives and what isn’t, and with Leo being a fire sign focused on self, you’ll probably feel called to look inward.

On the same day, January 28th, there’s also a cosmic meet-up between the Sun and Jupiter that marks what’s said to be one of the luckiest days of the year. So no big deal, but we can expect it to be a pretty high-energy day! If things have been feeling a bit heavy, this full moon, paired with Aquarius season, and the lucky meetup of the Sun and Jupiter, remind us that energy is always shifting and changing and something new can happen in an instant.

Full moons aren’t the time to start something new, but they do represent something coming to a culmination that we’ve been working on. Because this full moon is in Leo, it could be related to something personal that represents self like our public image, career, or personal style. Think back to the new moon we had on the 13th of January, maybe there was a project you began or an idea you started bouncing around that now feels ready to be unveiled.

Being Prepared Brings Possibilities

Knowing that this week holds one of the luckiest days of the year can feel like a lot of pressure to have something amazing happen. Famous Leo Lucille Ball (born August 6th, 1911) said this on the topic:

“Luck? I don’t know anything about luck. I’ve never banked on it and I’m afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else: Hard work—and realizing what is opportunity and what isn’t.”

Leo’s are known for their confidence, charisma, and powerful nature and I love that the iconic Lucy paved her own way and created her own luck by working hard and being unafraid to see things for what they are. The fact that one of the luckiest days of the year falls on the full moon in Leo can remind us of the value of being prepared. It can feel very conflicting to be excited for the new year and new possibilities, but also still in the midst of a pandemic and unsure of what the year will bring.

It could be easy to assume the Leo energy of the full moon will go unnoticed because we’re still not quite able to get dressed up, go out, and be seen (one of Leo’s specialties!) It could also be easy to assume nothing too lucky could happen to us on a random Thursday in January but…I think the moon cycles this month are setting us up to get prepared. We know the pandemic won’t last forever and eventually, life will be mostly back to normal. What do you want your new normal to be? How do you want to present yourself to the world after all of this is over?

It can be all too easy to feel stuck in a holding pattern because of all the uncertainties but this Thursday, use the cosmic energy of the day to allow yourself to really take a good look at your life and self. Take a page from Lucille Ball and be unafraid to recognize what’s working (what’s opportunity) and what isn’t. Where do you want to invest your hard work to set yourself up for success? The beauty of this practice is that when a stroke of luck does show up (whether it’s this Thursday or not) or when your time does come to shine, you’ll be ready for it!
