In astrology, the Spring Equinox marks the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. This year it falls on Saturday March 20th, which is also the first day of Aries season and the start of the astrological year! In the Northern Hemisphere we’re coming out of the sleepy winter and headed toward summer. Because of this, we might be starting to feel a little restless, even more so after quarantining for so long. This article will offer some insight into the energy of this season and how you can stay grounded during it.

Mars, the planet of action, entered Gemini on March 3rd and will stay there until April 23rd. With Gemini being a quick-thinking and fast moving air sign, we may be feeling even more restless and even slightly antsy. We’ll need to find ways to channel our energy because Aries season will also be making us feel fiery and feisty. Aries is a fire sign and the first of the 12 Zodiac signs. They have a competitive nature and like to challenge themselves.

Even though we’ll be feeling all of this forward-moving energy, Spring is a season that reminds us to slow down and be present because while there are more hours of daylight and shoots of green, things aren’t in bloom quite yet. In Japan they have a phrase for slowing down and enjoying the beauty of the present moment: ichigo-ichie, which translates to “this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” During Spring in Japan, everyone awaits the arrival of the cherry blossoms and once they bloom, people celebrate and enjoy the short period of time they have with the flowers before the petals fall.

One way we can prepare for Spring and embrace the equinox is by slowing down and grounding ourselves in the present moment. If you find yourself in a hurry or worrying you’re falling behind on things, it can be a nice reminder that we have plenty of time and the year is still fresh. It can be tempting to fall into the trap of thinking there are always better things ahead or that we need to constantly be on the go to really be experiencing life. Cherry blossoms only stay in bloom for about two weeks and serve as a reminder that if you don’t slow down, you could miss the beauty of the present moment.

Practical Ways to Embrace the Spring Equinox

Spring Cleaning

While cleaning doesn’t bring up the same dreamy symbolism as the beauty of cherry blossoms in bloom, it can still be very grounding. It’s also a great way to move our bodies and release any restlessness we may be feeling. You can imagine you’re cleaning house literally, physically, and spiritually. Spring is the perfect time to do a good clean sweep of our homes because it’s refreshing and it welcomes in new energy.

If you think back to the last time you moved, you might remember the feeling of walking into a blank slate of a room. It may be a little overwhelming, but it’s also full of possibility. If your space has accumulated a lot of extra items over the winter, you could even try moving everything out room by room. This will allow you to see your space with fresh eyes before putting things back together (if you have the time and energy for such an undertaking).

Plant a Seedling

If Mars in Gemini is causing you to question whether you’re taking enough action or worry you’re falling behind, planting a little seed can remind you that good things take time. Gardening is of course a very grounding activity, and nurturing baby sprouts will encourage you to slow down and notice the small changes that add up over time.

Make a Spring and Summer Bucket List

With travel restrictions, social distancing still in place, and events being canceled, a bucket list may feel challenging. One of the benefits of being present and slowing down to see the beauty of things around us is that we don’t always have to travel far to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There may be spring/summer activities you’re looking forward to right in your area, and creating a list you can reference can help channel restless energy. You could also connect with a friend in your area and start putting plans on the calendar for summer picnics, wildflower picking, boardwalk strolls, or whatever else is a must-do for you.

Start One Thing Now

In case your bucket list makes you start to wish away the next few months in anticipation of warmer days in June and July, remember that right now is also the perfect time to do things you love! Maybe there’s a book you’ve been meaning to read, a course you signed up for but haven’t done, a workout you’ve been wanting to try, or a haircut you’re worried you can’t pull off. Well, Aries season is the perfect time to do it. Aries are bold, and whatever direction they choose to go in, they go confidently. Astrology focuses on seasons and cycles, and the Spring Equinox reminds us that things are about to get busy and you might not have time for something you’ve been putting off.

Ensure You’re Taking Care of Your Body and Getting Enough Rest

This month we’re focusing on grounding in rest, and taking care of our physical bodies is a great way to do that. Health has been on the forefront of all of our minds recently and it’s always a good idea to make sure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals you need and getting enough sleep. If things are feeling a little slow or it seems like the winter is dragging on where you live, Spring is the perfect time to make sure you set some healthy routines in place.
