We’re getting back to the better normal after letting loose this holiday season, starting with a list of resolutions to ring in the new year. Our skincare goal for 2020 is simple: commit to the basics and to the environment. Check out our list and get inspired!

  1. Never sleep with makeup on

One night’s neglect can lead to weeks of skin despair, so we’re saving ourselves the trouble of a breakout and reminding ourselves to cleanse our skin before going to bed, every night! Acne is better prevented than cured, and sleeping with a bare face is less destructive than sleeping with makeup on.

Our tip: don’t rely on makeup wipes! You may likely not care about being thorough with your skincare when you’re exhausted, but makeup wipes aren’t known to be the most effective makeup removers, and residues may stick to your skin and cause problems later on.

To avoid this, get yourself a very effective and gentle oil cleanser to wash your face with before heading to bed. It will dissolve your makeup more thoroughly, gently, and quickly — and you can go to sleep with one less thing to worry about.

  1. Wear sunscreen daily

Sunscreen not only protects our skin from harsh effects of UV rays (skin cancer included), but it also acts as the best prevention against signs of early aging and a boost to our hyper-pigmentation treatments. It’s a skincare staple worth investing in, and there’s no better way to reap its rewards than by wearing it on your face and body, and every single day.

Our tip: sunscreen commitment is easier when you have a good one! Choose a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection, SPF30, and a texture your skin is comfortable with. The easier it is to apply, the easier it’ll be to commit to it everyday. Sun protection may be a necessity to your skincare routine, but it does not have to be tricky.

  1. Say no to regular rotations: empty a staple product first before opening a new one

Unless your skin has particular needs (e.g. sudden acne) or you have special circumstances (e.g. it’s part of your job to test out new things), there isn’t really a good reason to regularly rotate products instead of emptying them one by one.

You won’t know how effective a product is if it’s mixed with different ones all the time. If a breakout occurs, it’ll be difficult to figure out the cause: it could be the new product you just applied, or it could be a couple of items not being a good match on your skin.

We’re making our lives easier by sticking to one product per step. At the end of the day, our skin — and our wallet! — will be happier.

Our tip: If you have finicky skin, keep a minimal set of staples (cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen) and change your treatment (e.g. essences, toners, serums) according to your skin’s needs. This way your skin won’t be barraged by more than one change when the need to adjust your routine arises.

  1. Say goodbye to extra skincare waste

Ditch the dispensable cotton pads, makeup wipes, and tissue to dry your face with. Invest in reusable cotton pads and soft face towels. It’s 2020, and this planet is going to need all the help we can give it.

Our tip: Use your hands when applying toners and essences—not only can they be gentler, but they can also help your product absorb better. You don’t need the extra waste.

  1. Love your skin no matter what state it’s in

Our skin is never going to be perfect one hundred percent of the time, and that’s okay! Loving your skin doesn’t just mean accepting it for how it is, but also taking care of it as best as you can everyday. We don’t need to aim for trends like “chok-chok skin” or “glass skin” (which is really just makeup anyway) — healthy skin is beautiful skin, and that’s the better normal we want to get used to.

Our tip: Stop micro-analyzing your skin in the mirror and magnifying the “flaws” that don’t matter in real life. Don’t let your self-esteem be defined by dark eye bags, acne, or a couple of wrinkles. These flaws happen, they’re normal, and they don’t matter for as much and as long as you think. Embrace your skin and work it!
