With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is on the brain. And while we often associate this holiday with romantic love, it’s also a nice time to celebrate all forms of love in our life, including self-love. Love for ourselves probably means different things to different people and we all have our own ways of showing it. Depending on your own personal birth chart you probably have ways you like to show love and ways you like to receive love. The book “The 5 Love Languages” lays out 5 main styles for this, but I tend to think there are many more ways! Keep reading if you want to see 12 different ideas for showing yourself some love this Valentine’s Day. Feel free to read for your Sun, Moon, and Rising sign (or read all 12 because you can practice any of these regardless of your astrology).
As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries has a playful, fun, and sometimes childlike inner world. This isn’t to say they’re immature…(although they can be at times) but they’re able to see the world with wonder and believe they can do anything they set their mind to. A nice self-love practice if you’re an Aries could be to embrace this side of you. Maybe you hold back sometimes in fear that you’ll come across as too bold or even arrogant, but give yourself the advice you’d give a best friend and “do the damn thing,” because we all know you’re capable of it!
If you follow any astrology meme accounts, then you already know our grounded Taurus friends can be stereotyped as loving comfort, all things cozy, and…good food. Whether you resonate with this or not as a Taurus, most often you just know what you like and are good at giving it to yourself. You’re probably very versed in the world of self-care, which is a great thing! You’re ruled by Venus, which is the planet of beauty, so a nice self-love practice could be to prepare a beautiful home-cooked meal, even if it’s just for you!
Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, so even when you’re not talking your mind is probably busy thinking…and thinking…and thinking. You’re great at what you do and while your mind is a powerful tool, it can also be nice to give yourself a break. It may sound like the last thing you want to do this Valentine’s day (most likely you’re busy planning a fun date with your special someone or coordinating an amazing virtual Galentine’s Day celebration with your besties!) but your self-love practice is to try quieting your mind. For example, you can try a few minutes of meditation and see how amazing it feels to just be.
Sweet Cancers love love, so you might not need any encouragement this time of year to spread it! Just remember to save some for yourself and while you’re at it, remember to take time for yourself. Cancers are compassionate and empathetic, which are wonderful traits, but it can also be easy to lose yourself in other people’s drama or take on the needs of others. Don’t let yourself fall into the trap of thinking that’s just what you have to do when you love someone. Your self-love practice is getting clear on some helpful boundaries and communicating them to those around you. This can be the most loving thing you can do for someone and also for yourself.
Ruled by the Sun, people born under this sign are often pure warmth. You have a reputation for being a little vain, but you’re often also doling out compliments to others and want everyone to channel their inner lioness. You might find yourself feeling like you need others to recognize your amazing traits and while that’s always a good feeling, remember that you can give yourself the validation you crave. Whether you’re single or partnered up this year, your self-love practice is to remind yourself of your fiery fierceness. it might feel really good to get dressed up and do your own little photoshoot or hire someone to take photos of you if your online presence needs an update.
Oh Virgo, sometimes you can be so…critical of those you love. This can be seen as a bad thing, but it’s one of the ways you show you care (as a Virgo myself I know this makes no sense). While this habit can fuel you towards growth, sometimes it’s nice to just take a break from it. Like fellow earth sign Taurus, you’re probably also fairly good at self-care. Earth signs tend to be practical and seek out healthy habits in their self-care, so your self-love practice is to do something that’s purely indulgent this month.
Sometimes as a Libra you can have a hard time saying no (and yes) to things. You like for everyone to be happy, which can lead to indecision and overthinking. You try to see things from all perspectives (which is endearing) but your self-love practice is to show yourself some love by thinking about just yourself for once. Libras tend to love partnership, so you might be thinking “Valentine’s Day isn’t the day to think solely of myself!” Feel free to shower your loved ones in any way you want, but remember it’s not selfish to put yourself first sometimes.
Scorpios tend to be a little intense and probably see Valentine’s Day as one of two extremes: 1) A chance to go all out, which could be extravagant gifts for a partner or turning up the charm if they’re single, or 2) A holiday they think should die a slow, painful death (intense). Regardless of which category you fall into, your self-love practice is to slow down and take a break from whatever you’re currently channeling your signature drive into. That might sound like the last thing you have time for, but try spending an afternoon (or a day!) doing something that’s just fun and not part of your bigger master plan.
As a fire sign, Sagittarius is known for having a lot of energy. You’re most likely juggling many different projects, and with so many things going on, details can slip through the cracks. If you’re planning something special for someone, do yourself a favor and make a quick list of the steps you need to take to make it happen. As a self-love practice, I suggest doing the same thing. Zoom out from the macro and take a look at the micro details in your life. Do your plants need watering? Does your fridge need some food? Make sure you’re taking care of yourself!
Practical Capricorn doesn’t have time for self-love…just kidding, of course you do! You probably appreciate actions more than words and show your loved ones you care by doing things for them. In your own life, you’re probably quite good at taking care of yourself, and maybe feel like self-love sounds a little cheesy. The good news is that you don’t have to say affirmations in the mirror if you don’t want to. You spend a lot of time working and being responsible, so a self-love practice could be buying yourself an item that’s been on your wishlist for a while now!
We’re right in the middle of your season, Aquarius, which means this holiday is somewhat close to your birthday and hopefully that makes you happy! You enjoy feeling celebrated and are also good at celebrating others. Your sign is associated with the collective and deep down you’re a humanitarian. It may seem counterintuitive, but a helpful self-love practice could be participating in something. Maybe it’s an online course you’ve been wanting to join, or a zoom trivia night..whatever it may be just jump in and enjoy being part of the group.
Forever the mystic, Pisces is very in tune with their own needs and the needs of others. The spiritual side of life is as natural to you as everyday life, and you associate self-love with tending to your inner world. As a water sign, you probably enjoy a luxurious Epson salt bath and have an extensive essential oil collection. You don’t need any encouragement to enjoy those types of self-care! A self-love practice you could try is being unapologetic about needing your alone time. You may feel guilty for it at times, but give yourself the same freedom you give others.
