Each year in October, people around the world show their support for individuals affected by breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual campaign raises awareness of the disease’s international impact and the many ways you can support women in need. According to The National Breast Cancer Foundation, over 300,000 breast cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2020. Of those who are currently diagnosed, over 40,000 women are expected to die this year.
There are many ways to get involved and show support, from making a donation to fund screening, education, and emotional wellbeing, sharing a story of how you or someone you love has been affected by breast cancer, or supporting businesses that are giving back to breast cancer awareness initiatives with your wallet.
There is power in where we choose to spend our hard-earned money. By shopping with companies that share our values and actively support breast cancer care, we can maximize funding for life-changing research and resources for those affected.
Below are some of my favorite affordable wellness and self care must-haves from women-owned brands that support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
I can’t stop gushing about Rael. I wish this brand was around when I first got my period. Now, they’re the only menstrual products I’ll use. I alternate between the liners, pads, and tampons. The organic cotton is comfortable and great at protecting me against leaks. The minimalist packaging is also sleek, which means I proudly flaunt it when I make my way to the bathroom to change my tampon instead of concealing it with shame.
For every box of tampons bought on GetRael.com in October, Rael will be donating a box of tampons to I Support The Girls. Rael is also donating products to create 3-month care kits called DASH Kits for survivors of domestic violence.
Organic Cotton Core Tampons, $7
Living in Los Angeles means my skin is always dry. I didn’t realize how dehydrated my skin was until I used Hey Dewy’s portable humidifier. It’s an easy way to infuse moisture into the air and pamper your skin and sinuses. The mist is light and gentle, which soothes my skin throughout the day and makes me feel like I’m in my own mini quarantine spa. I power it straight from my laptop with a micro-USB cord that’s included when I’m working during the day and keep it on my bedside table at night for round the clock hydration. I’m seriously obsessed with this.
Hey Dewy will be donating 10% of all sales to Breasties for the month of October and is available for pre-order.
Hey Dewy Portable Humidifier, $39
Ask any of my friends and they’ll tell you that I gave up wearing bras years ago. I used to feel pressured by society to wear a bra, but I could never find one that was comfortable. As a solution, I decided to buy looser clothes made with thicker fabric to conceal my chest. The only bras I own are seamless ones that don’t prod or poke my ribs. The Ruby Ribbon Second-Skin Demiette is true to its name and feels like I’m barely wearing anything at all–in a good way. It’s so nondescript that I wear it as a top on its own when I’m at home.
For the month of October Ruby Ribbon will contribute 10% of proceeds from all sales to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. If you’re looking for a brand that supports Breast Cancer Awareness month, Ruby Ribbon is a great choice.
Second-Skin Demiette, $59
Gorjana makes beautiful, stackable bracelets that are light-weight and easy to wear. Their gemstones each represent a quality that you’d like to see more of in your life and when I wear them, they serve as a nice reminder to myself throughout the day when I need an extra boost of positivity. Even though I’m working from home, I enjoy the morning ritual of putting on my jewelry. These bracelets are simple and go perfectly well with whatever I choose to wear, whether it’s a sweatsuit or a cocktail dress.
For the month of October, 50% of proceeds from the rhodochrosite Power Gemstone bracelet for compassion will go towards breast cancer research, prevention, and care. Rhodochrosite also represents self-confidence and self-love, which we can all use more of these days.
